Free weekend meals for students available starting October 1

NOTE: A Spanish-language version of this story is attached below.

WEST COLUMBIA, SC -- Lexington Two students will be able to get free weekend meals by curbside pickup, starting October 1.

Weekend meals must be reserved in advance and are available for pickup each Thursday between 11am-12pm at Cayce Elementary, Riverbank Elementary, Pine Ridge Middle and Airport High School. Weekend meals include breakfast and lunch for Saturday and Sunday.

The weekend meals are in addition to those served weekdays for Lexington Two’s hybrid and full-time Virtual Academy students. The free meals are a result of the USDA’s extension of its summer meals program, through December 31, 2020,  amid COVID-19. (Find instructions for pre-ordering meals for curbside pickup at the bottom of this story.)

Here’s a look at how the weekday meal program works.

HYBRID STUDENTS

Hybrid students will be able to receive free breakfast and lunch while at school during their assigned in-person days.

Students also will be able to take home meals as they are dismissed at the end of the school day for their remote weekday learning.

students will take home breakfast and lunch for Friday.

VIRTUAL ACADEMY STUDENTS

Orders for free meals must be placed in advance on the PayPams website, so food services will know how many meals to prepare for each family.

Curbside pickup of pre-ordered meals will be offered two days a week -- Monday and Thursday only -- from 11am-12pm at four Lexington Two schools: Cayce Elementary, Riverbank Elementary, Pine Ridge Middle and Airport High.  You do not have to be a student at the school to pick up your meals at that location.

WORTH NOTING

The free meals are a result of the USDA’s extension of its summer meals program, through December 31, 2020,  amid COVID-19.

There is a possibility that the USDA will not receive enough funding from Congress to cover free meals for the entire period through December 31. Therefore, we encourage our Lexington Two families to complete an online application to see whether they qualify for free or reduced price meals.  Visit www.paypams.com/onlineapp and follow the instructions.  A new application is required each school year, and only one application per household is needed.  Paper applications are available at each school's front office or at the Lexington Two district office.
