Dear Lexington Two Employees and Families:
Governor Henry McMaster and Education Superintendent Molly Spearman announced on April 22 that all South Carolina schools will remain closed through the end of the school year.
While Lexington Two’s offices and school buildings will remain closed, and all sports and activities cancelled, the teaching and learning will go on. That said, we still have many decisions to make in wrapping up the 2019-20 school year.
As far as the academic calendar, the SC Department of Education has announced that the last day for seniors will be Friday, May 15. Seniors must have completed courses, demonstrated mastery and completed any course remediation by this date.
In terms of graduation, we will continue to follow guidance and executive orders from state leaders and health officials on social distancing and other recommendations for safety. Like all South Carolina high schools, we are considering contingency plans for graduation. An overview of our plan is posted here. In the event we are able to come up with a plan to hold traditional ceremonies -- while still maintaining social distancing and other state guidance -- then the photos and videos outlined in our plan will be added recognition for our outstanding seniors. If we are not able to hold our traditional ceremonies, then we want to do everything we can right now to honor the achievements of the Class of 2020. This doesn’t preclude doing something else at a later date, but we want to make sure we capture this moment, as these seniors finish their high school careers this spring. Please stay tuned for a final decision in coming days.
Finally, we will need to decide how to gather iPads, Chromebooks, textbooks and other school-issued items from students, as well as allow families to pick up any personal items students may have left behind before the governor closed schools in early March. Some of what we know is posted here, but expect to hear more from your child's school in coming days.
While we had certainly hoped to return to school this year, keeping schools closed is the safest course of action at this time to keep our students, families, employees and community safe and healthy.
