WEST COLUMBIA, SC -- Pine Ridge Middle students are raising awareness about plastic pollution -- on land and in the ocean.
It’s part of an effort helped by Communities in Schools of the Midlands, which helped secure funding from Dominion Energy to help implement the 2019-20 school year initiative.
After a school-wide project kickoff with representatives from Palmetto Ocean Conservancy about the effects of plastic trash on beaches and ocean animals, students are spending the year studying the topic in science, participating in a “Speak Out” competition in English Language Arts and collecting bottle caps and plastic lids to create a mural with these items.
The goal is to educate students that they can make an impact in curbing plastic pollution and be advocates for a safer and cleaner environment.
